Instituto de Migraciones y Servicios Sociales (Migration and Social Services Institute) (Royal Decree 140/1997 of 31 January 1997 and Royal Decree 238/2002 of 1 March 2002). Duties:

Manages the non-contributory procedures of invalidity and old-age pensions. Duties transferred to the Autonomous Communities, with the exception of Ceuta and Melilla.

Complementary services in relation to the provisions of the social security system for the elderly and disabled.

Assistance, social promotion and integration of immigrants, displaced people, asylum seekers and refugees.

Monitoring the management of economic benefits deriving from Law 13/1982 of 7 April 1982 on the Social Integration of the Disabled.

The proposed basic legislation, guaranteeing the principles of equality and solidarity for determining scales for the purposes of recognition of degrees of disability.

Setting up and managing special care centres of those assigned special research or experimental objectives operating nationwide within the Institute’s field of operations.

Proposing, managing and following up nationwide social service plans within the body’s field of operations.

Relations with foreign and national bodies and technical assistance for international cooperation programmes aimed at the population within its field of operations.

The departments determined by each autonomous government are responsible for the management of social programmes transferred to the Autonomous Communities which make up the State by virtue of the powers attributed to them in their respective statutes of autonomy (see the telephone directory for information).

Care and social assistance is provided for citizens in every municipality (see the telephone directory for information).
