Trains, Trams & Railways in Valencia

  • RENFE (Red de los Ferrocarriles Españoles) is the Spanish national rail train service. It is possible to find information, plan trips and check fees and timetables on the RENFE website, which has an English version: RENFE website
  • Cercanías is the commuter train network which operates in all major cities in Spain. There is one in Valencia: Valencia Cercanías

Metro

The Metro provides the metropolitan area of Valencia with more than 130 Km of rail lines as well as a modern tram line.

Tram

Valencian Railways (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valènciana - FGV) operates the Alicante - Denia line, which runs along the northern coast of the province of Alicante. It is served by 13 diesel trains which operate between Alicante and Denia and five trams which cover the Alicante - El Campello route.

As train services can be very busy, it is suggested to buy tickets online. Tickets can be ordered online for seats on AVE, AV Media Distancia, Talgo 200, TRD trains, R-598 and all Great Lines trains during the day.

Pets On Trains

National RENFE train lines

Dogs, cats and domestic animals may travel on RENFE trains however the following restrictions apply for national RENFE trains (Grandes Lineas):

  • Only one pet per accompanying passenger is allowed on board
  • The person accompanying the animal is responsible for it and any damage caused by it on the journey
  • Animals must weigh less than 6 Kg
  • Animals must be kept in a cage (unless seats in a cabin are booked); the cage may be no larger than 65cm x 35cm x 35cm and must be able to contain any excrement made by the animal
  • Where applicable, dogs must wear a muzzle
  • A ticket must be purchased for the travelling animal; the fare is usually 50 percent of the accompanying human fare
  • Guide dogs for the blind are allowed free of charge on RENFE trains

Local RENFE train lines

Dogs, cats and domestic animals may travel on RENFE trains however the following restrictions apply for local RENFE trains (trenes de Cercanías):

  • There is no weight limit regarding dogs, cats and birds travelling on local RENFE trains
  • Animals are not allowed on trains between 13:00 and 16:00 Monday to Friday (although they may travel at any time on public holidays and weekends)
  • It is not necessary to keep the animal in a cage although the animal must not be able to run around
  • Where applicable dogs must wear a muzzle
  • The person accompanying the animal is responsible for it and any damage caused by it on the journey
  • Pets can travel for free

Bicycles on Trains

Bicycles may be taken on some RENFE trains.

Reductions & Discounts
  • Children under six years of age travel free on RENFE trains
  • A reduction of 50% is given on the price of a single or return ticket for children under twelve years of age
  • Group discounts are available but apply only if the group is making the same journey at the same time on the same date
  • A Tarjeta Dorada (Golden Ticket) is available for pensioners (over 60 years of age) and people with a 65% or more disability. The ticket qualifies holders for a 40% reduction on the price of single or return journeys any day of the week. Those accompanying a disabled traveller also receive the discount.
  • Family discounts are also available but are dependent on family size and circumstance. Inquire at ticket offices.

Valencia Tourist Card (VLC)

The Valencia Tourist Card entitles the holder to free public transport in the city of Valencia (zone A) and discounts for museum visits, leisure activities, shops and restaurants. Establishments that accept the discount card will display a sticker.

Cards can be obtained from hotels, kiosks and tourist offices and are valid for a period of one, two or three days. The card is activated when used for the first time on public transport or when a date is stamped at a sales point. It is valid until midnight on the expiry date.
